Breast reconstruction & cosmetic breast surgery

Breast reconstruction and cosmetic breast surgery are both surgical procedures related to altering the appearance of the breasts, but they serve different purposes.

Breast Reconstruction
  • Purpose: Breast reconstruction is typically performed after mastectomy (removal of one or both breasts) due to breast cancer or other medical reasons. The aim is to restore the breast's appearance, contour, and symmetry.
  • Techniques: There are several techniques for breast reconstruction, including implants, tissue expanders, flap reconstruction (using tissue from other parts of the body), and a combination of these methods.
  • Importance: Breast reconstruction can have significant psychological benefits for women who have undergone mastectomy, helping them regain confidence and feel more comfortable with their bodies.
Cosmetic Breast Surgery
  • Purpose: Cosmetic breast surgery is performed primarily for aesthetic reasons, to alter the size, shape, or position of the breasts to achieve the desired appearance.
  • Procedures: Common cosmetic breast surgeries include breast augmentation (enlargement with implants or fat transfer), breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty), and revision surgeries to correct previous breast procedures.
  • Motivation: Cosmetic breast surgery is often sought by women who desire to enhance their breast appearance, improve symmetry, correct asymmetry, or address issues such as sagging or disproportionate breast size.

While both types of surgeries involve alterations to the breasts, breast reconstruction is typically medically necessary, whereas cosmetic breast surgery is elective and performed for aesthetic reasons.
